Short answer: Some treated hairs may shed within 1–2 weeks, but timing varies—don’t expect all hair to “fall out” immediately after a session.
What “shedding” after IPL really looks like
After IPL, you may notice some hairs seem to loosen and shed gradually rather than disappear right away. This is often easiest to see when hair regrowth becomes patchy or finer over the next days and weeks.
Why shedding timing varies
- Hair cycle differences: Not all hairs are in the same growth stage.
- Treated area: Body areas can respond differently from the face or underarms.
- Consistency: IPL works best across a series of sessions, not a single treatment.
What to do (and not do) while waiting for shedding
- Do shave, don’t wax/pluck: Shave before sessions and avoid removing the root. See Shave the Area Before Using MITHLUX.
- Use correct contact: Keep the window flat for consistent light delivery: Place the Window Flat During IPL Use.
- Move steadily: Treat one area at a time: Move Slowly, One Area at a Time.
- Don’t over-treat: If skin feels irritated, pause and keep things gentle. See Aftercare & Results.
When “no shedding” might mean something is off
Not seeing obvious shedding after one session can still be normal—especially early on. If you’ve completed several consistent sessions and still see no change, review: Why isn’t my at-home IPL working? and the beginner timeline in What to Expect in Your First Weeks of IPL Use.
Safety reminder
If you feel strong pain, unexpected burning, or notice unusual skin changes, stop and reassess. For suitability and precautions, review Safety & Suitability and perform a patch test: How do you perform a patch test before IPL?.
