Should you lower the level for underarms vs legs?

Short answer: Many people do better starting lower on underarms than legs, because underarm skin is thinner and naturally darker, which can increase sensitivity.

Even if you tolerate a higher level on legs, underarms can feel hotter or more “stingy.” That doesn’t always mean something is wrong—it often means you should treat underarms as a separate area with its own safe starting point.

Why underarms often need a lower level

  • Thinner skin: less “buffer” can make heat feel stronger.
  • Naturally darker tone: underarms often contain more pigment, which may absorb more light energy.
  • Folds and curves: it’s easier to overlap flashes or press unevenly.
  • Deodorant/shaving friction: can make skin more reactive.

A safe way to choose your level for underarms

  1. Patch test first and wait 24 hours to judge your skin response: How do you perform a patch test before IPL?
  2. Start lower than legs for the first 1–2 sessions, then increase gradually only if comfort stays consistent.
  3. Don’t chase “stronger = faster.” Consistency matters more than pushing intensity.

When you should definitely lower the level

  • You feel sharp pain, burning, or lingering heat
  • You see unusual swelling, blistering, or strong redness
  • Your underarms are darker than usual (friction, irritation, or recent sun exposure elsewhere)
  • You accidentally overlapped flashes

How to adjust over time (practical)

  • Starter phase: keep the same comfortable level for several sessions before changing anything.
  • If discomfort increases: step down 1–2 levels next time and widen spacing (see below).
  • Maintenance: you may not need high levels—many people maintain results with moderate settings and less frequent sessions.
