Preparing your skin before an IPL session can make treatments smoother, more consistent, and more comfortable. It also helps reduce common user mistakes that may limit results. If you want a faster overview, see Skin Prep Guide.
- Clean, dry skin (no lotion/oil/sunscreen/deodorant).
- Shave (avoid waxing/plucking).
- Avoid strong sun exposure or tanning right before sessions.
- Don’t treat irritated or broken skin.
- Start low, then step up gradually if comfortable.
New to IPL? Consider doing a small test first: How do you perform a patch test before IPL?
1) Clean and dry the area
Remove makeup, lotions, oils, sunscreen, and deodorant. IPL tends to work most consistently when the skin surface is clean and free from residue. If you’re building a routine, start here: How to Prepare Your Skin for Safe At-Home IPL Sessions.
2) Shave — do not wax or pluck
Shaving (often 12–24 hours before a session) helps keep the surface smooth while leaving the hair root in place for light-based targeting. Waxing or plucking removes the root, which may reduce results during an IPL routine. Full guide: Shave the Area Before Using MITHLUX S2 PULSE.
3) Avoid strong sun exposure
Give your skin time to return to its natural, untanned state before sessions. Sunburned or recently tanned skin is more likely to react and is less predictable for light-based treatments. If you’re unsure whether your current skin tone is suitable, check: Does skin tone affect IPL safety? and the hub page Safety & Suitability.
4) Check your skin condition
Do not treat irritated, broken, or inflamed skin. Wait until the surface looks and feels normal again. For a clear “when not to use” list, see: When IPL Is Not Recommended.
5) Start with a lower level
If you’re new to IPL, begin with a lower level and increase only as comfort allows. For a practical way to pick levels, use: How to Choose a Starting IPL Level and Choose Your Energy Level on MITHLUX S2 PULSE.
A little preparation makes every session smoother — and it helps you get the most out of a consistent routine.
